Meet the Brain Behind the Stories
Each character in the Marcus Meerkat series represents a different part of the brain, helping children visualise what's happening when they feel calm, scared, angry, or overwhelmed.

Marcus Meerkat represents the part of the brain that is always on the lookout for danger. When it senses a threat, it "sounds an alarm" and can take over, making it difficult to think logically. This is called the amygdala.
Eddie Elephant represents the part of the brain that stores memories and emotions. This is called the hippocampus.
Olivia Owl represents the thinking and planning part of the brain. This part helps with problem-solving and regulating emotions, but it goes "offline" when the Meerkat brain is overwhelmed by stress or fear. This is called prefrontal cortex.
When our Meerkat part of the brain feels overwhelmed and stressed we need to send it more oxygen to help us feel calm. We can do this by taking deep and slow breaths. Practicing breathing daily can help Marcus Meerkat know what to do.
